Protests, Demonstrations against ‘Attack’ on Digvijay
Bhopal: A day after former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and key AICC general secretary was injured while leading an anti-state government protest in Rajgarh, the Congress came out in full force taking to the streets staging demonstrations, shutdowns and torching effigies in several parts of the state on Wednesday.
The police resorted to a baton charge, injuring six party activists, during a party demonstration in the TT Nagar area of the city, said party sources.
Rejecting the Congress claim, Bhopal Superintendent of Police Jaideep Prasad, however, said that one Congress activist sustained injuries, when the police used mild force to move the demonstration out of a prohibited area.
The demonstration was a part of a state wide protest called by the Youth Congress against, what it terms an “attack” on the former Chief Minister.
Reports coming in from Rajgarh suggest that local police have filed cases against state Youth Congress president Jeetu Patwari and 200 other party activists for allegedly attempting to thrash government employees and threatening to kill them, said a report on the Zeenews.com.
Shutdowns and demonstrations have also been reported from Sarangpur, Pachore, Boda and Machalpur towns in Rajgarh district, and Guna, Khargone, Harda, Indore and Ratlam.
In a memorandum submitted to Governor Rameshwar Thakur in Bhopal, Congress leaders, led by Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi sought a judicial inquiry and suspension of officials involved in the Rajgarh incident on Tuesday.
The memorandum contended that Congress workers were peacefully protesting against the unscheduled power cuts in the Rajgarh district, when the police “resorted to lathicharge and lobbed tear gas shells to silence the party workers”.
While the Congress claims that Digvijay Singh was hurt in police action in Rajgarh, the district administration says the leader was injured in stone pelting indulged in, by Congress workers.
