MP Assembly Clears Anti-terror Bill

The Madhya Pradesh Assembly on Thursday cleared the MP Terrorism and Disruptive Activities and Control of Organised Crimes Bill 2010, said media reports.

According to reports, 61 members voted in favour and 26 against the bill.

The bill, which has provisions for capital punishment or life imprisonment for such activities, has been passed by the state assembly for the second time.

For the first time, state government sent an identical bill to the Centre in 2007 for approval. However, the central government returned it without recommending any changes, citing its clearance was not needed at that stage.

The state government was asked to get the bill cleared, seek the Governor’s approval and then send it to the President.

As per the provisions, the proposed legislation will remain in force for three years and later be extended from time to time.
