Fire at Army Base near Kolkata

Two days after Stephen House fire tragedy, a fire started in an army base at Panagarh, some 120 km from Kolkata, on Thursday night, said media reports.

According to reports, from one in the night, loud explosions were heard at the army base continuously for two hours and even a munition there caught fire.

As the explosions triggered high flames leaping into the air and turning the sky red, yellow and black, panic spread among the villagers of neighbouring Bud Bud village, reports said.

“Thousands of villagers came out of their homes in panic and gathered on National Highway 2 at the dead of night. But the defence personnel sealed all the gates and none was allowed to go near the camp,” Swapan Khan, a local resident, was quoted as saying.

“Our houses were shaking due to the explosions,” he said.

So far no casualty was reported in the incident as army personnel attempted to control fire through the night, said reports.

In the morning the fire appeared to be under control.
