I will strive for the protection and restoration of the Taj Mahal: Sharmila

BHOPAL: Bollywood actress and late Nawab Pataudi’s wife Sharmila Tagore learnt about the state government’s decision from WMF India representative Amita Baig.

On Thursday WMF signed an agreement with the state government to conserve the Taj Mahal palace.

The Taj Mahal of Bhopal, was the private property of the last ruler of Bhopal Nawab Hamidullah Khan, who opened it for Sindhi refugees.

“Taj Mahal palace is Bhopal’s heritage. It belongs to the people of Bhopal and saving the monument from destruction should be our objective,” said Sharmila according to sources.

“I am not against development, but we have to protect our heritage and be proud of it. Development and conserving heritage can go hand in hand,” she added.

“My husband was also into the restoration of the palace and had a special liking for the building,” she added remembering how the royal family shifted to the palace during the time of plague and also the pilgrimage to Haj from the same palace.

She said, “I will strive for the protection and restoration of the Taj Mahal and the heritage of Bhopal.”
