Kisses Aside, Kurbaan Smacks of Similarities with Fanaa
Kissing the headlines for their record breaking lip-lock the Kareena-Saif starrer Kurbaan, going by a synopsis released on the movie website, smacks of similarities with Fanaa, the 2006 romance-thriller starring Kajol and Aamir Khan.
Written and directed by Rensil D’Silva, Kurbaan revolves around Avantika (Kareena Kapoor), a Psychology professor from New York and Ehsaan (Saif Ali Khan), whom she meets after arriving in Delhi to be by her ailing father’s side.
Following some romantic interludes, the two get married and the plot gradually shifts back to the US to settle in a clichéd Muslim neighbourhood in New York, where residents, according to reports, dwell in another time and space.
After several unimaginative insights into stereotyped ‘Muslim culture’ Avantika discovers Ehsaan to be a terrorist, on a conspiracy to well….. hijack an aircraft, and herself to be a mere cover used by him.
While the synopsis provides no clue to the climax, promos featuring Saif with a bullet wound on his chest and the tagline “some love stories have blood on them” just might be a pointer toward further similarities between this Karan Johar production and Fanaa produced by his mate Aditya Chopra.
Kurbaan, coming amid speculations of an impending marriage between the junior Nawab of Pataudi (and Bhopal) – Saif and the uncrowned princess of Bollywood – Kareena, looks like an effort to capitalise on the huge interest generated by their off-screen relationship.
With the sensitivity of the subject and complexity of their own emotions intricately woven into the storyline, the eloquent Khan has already gone on record saying the Kurbaan schedule, part of which coincided with the 26/11 terror strikes, was ‘depressing’ for the love birds.
