Doctor-Population Ratio in MP Is One-fifth of National Average
Madhya Pradesh has a doctor-population ratio which is one-fifth of national average, causing acute shortage of doctors in government hospitals, reported PTI.
“According to officials figures of 2007, the doctor-population ratio in Madhya Pradesh stands at one doctor for 18,451 persons, which is far below the national average of one doctor for 3,500 persons,” Professor of Community Medicine at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Indore Sanjay Dixit was quoted as saying.
Dixit is in-charge of maintenance of records of medical facilities available in the state.
According to a senior doctor, WHO recommends one doctor for 1,500 people, report said.
Nevertheless, President of Resident Doctors Association of Madhya Pradesh Anand Rai said that there was wide gap between the official figures and the ground reality, said report.
