Islamabad ‘Unsettled’ by Pressure on Eastern Border, Pak Envoy

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan has said that his country has sent additional troops to its border with India because of rising tensions and that Islamabad has been ‘unsettled’ by pressure on its eastern border, reported PTI.

Talking to London-based Financial Times, Hasan said that New Delhi’s assertiveness was weakening his country’s ability to combat Pakistani Taliban militants, report said.

“He (Hasan) said Islamabad had been unsettled by pressure on its eastern border created by the building of military cantonments close to the sensitive frontier over the past year,” the newspaper reported.

The newspaper reported quoting a top Pakistani authority that rising tensions with India allegedly stopped Islamabad from expanding its army offensive against Taliban militants on its western border, said report.

“The government has had to send some troops down there because we don’t want to leave ourselves exposed,” Hasan was quoted as saying.

“This is taking away from our defence capabilities on the Afghan border.”
