Mobs Ransack ‘Kannada Prabha’ Office in Mangalore

A mob comprising of some 30 people vandalized the Mangalore office of ‘Kannada Prabha’ newspaper before setting it on fire late on Tuesday evening. The daily has been in the eye of a raging controversy since it published an anti-Burqa article purportedly written by controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin.

“The Kannada Prabha office was ransacked by unidentified people. They threw a kerosene bottle in the office which led to the fire. There have been no injuries but office and property have been damaged. The office was ransacked at 2115 hrs IST today (Tuesday),” Mangalore SP Dr Subramanyeshwara Rao was quoted as saying by IBNLive website.

According to reports, angry mobs also attacked offices of another Kannada newspaper ‘Jaya Kirana’. No injuries have been reported from the incident.

Karnataka Police have provided security to all offices and journalists of Kannada Prabha.

‘Kannada Prabha’ has been mirerd in a huge row since Feb. 28 when it carried an article, it claims to have been reproduced from a book written by Taslima Nasrin.

The article sparked off violent protests in Shimoga and Hassan towns of the state on Monday.

Two people were killed, including one in police firing, in Shimoga town, which has since been under curfew.

Exiled-Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin on Tuesday denied writing any article for a Kannada newspaper.
