Hockey World Cup: Australia Beat India 5-2

Dampening spirits soaring since the host’s recent victory over arch-rivals Pakistan, Australia on Tuesday thrashed India 5-2 in pool B fixture of the Hockey World Cup in New Delhi.

Completely outclassing India, Liam De Young scored a field goal for the Kookaburras in the second minute of the game and consolidated when Glen Turner scored on a deflection through the second penalty corner in the 10th minute.

Desmond Abbot found the board for a spectacular field goal in the 26th before Vikram Pillai pulled one back for the hosts in the 34th minute to end the first half.

In the second half, Luke Doerner and Glenn Tuner scored in quick succession to wipe out prospects of a comeback by the hosts.

Rajpal Singh scored the second goal for India.

With just around five minutes to go for the long whistle, Australia was awarded a penalty stroke, but a splendid save denied the Kookaburras any further celebrations.

In other Pool ‘B’ outings, Pakistan beat Spain 2-1 and England trounced South Africa 6-4 to retain the top of the table position with two wins from as many matches.
