Attack on Rathore: Utsav Sent to Judicial Custody

A court on Wednesday sent Utsav Sharma, the NID student from Varanasi, to 14 days in judicial custody for involvement in a vigilante knife attack on former Haryana police chief SPS Rathore – convicted for molesting teenager Ruchika Girhotra over 19 years ago.

Sharma’s parents attended proceedings in the court of civil judge Paramjit Kaur, who allowed the accused to move an application for bail.

Utsav, brandishing a small-knife, stabbed Rathore in the face outside the Chandigarh district court premises on Monday.

He was arrested immediately after the attack and booked under Sections 324 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In December 2009, a CBI special court held Rathore guilty of molesting 15-year-old Ruchika Girhotra in Panchkula town in August 1990. The former police official was sentenced to six months’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs.1,000. He was granted bail immediately after the conviction.

Ruchika Girhotra committed suicide in 1993.
