Alarms for Congress, MRPS Unveils Political Plans

Miffed with Congress due to inaction over its long standing demands, the Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) has unveiled plans to take the political route and says it will contest the forthcoming assembly and Lok Sabha polls as part of the Opposition Grand Alliance in Andhra Pradesh.

Coming barely a month before the twin elections the state faces, the development is likely to add more worry-lines to the frowning Congress brow.

The MRPS, which seeks reservation under the Scheduled Castes category for the Madigas, announced the decision on Sunday and said it would contest 30 assembly and four parliamentary segments.

The plans are yet to be sealed with approval from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) which heads the Grand Alliance.

Alliance constituents, including the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) are yet to reach a seat-sharing agreement.

The MRPS has been fuelling a violent agitation for more reservations for the community and recently targeted the state Congress headquarters in Hyderabad, where it tried to spark a fire during Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s recent visit to the state.
