Delhi Metro Chief Withdraws Resignation
Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan, a day after he stepped down owning moral responsibility for a mishap at a construction site in which 6 people were killed, has withdrawn his resignation.
“E Sreedharan has decided to withdraw his resignation in view of the letter he received from chief minister Sheila Dikshit (asking him to continue as the DMRC Managing Director),” Metro Rail spokesperson Anuj Dayal told media persons.
According to Dayal, the metro chief made an allowance for Delhi Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna and Union Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy who had persuaded him to withdraw his resignation and continue in the post.
It may be mentioned that the 77-year-old renowned technocrat relinquished his post hours after an under construction bridge collapsed yesterday in south Delhi’s Zamrudpur area, a Metro construction site, killing six people and injuring 15 others.
Last night, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had rejected his resignation saying that the Delhi Metro and the country needed his services.
“We respect his sentiments. But we also know that the Delhi Metro and the country need him. Not only he does good work for Delhi but also for the country,” she said.
Highly placed sources said that the government rejected Sreedharan’s resignation as it viewed that his continuation was necessary for successful completion of Metro projects ahead of the Commonwealth Games next year.
