Centre Bans Short Message Service to Postpaid Mobile Users in J&K

For security reasons, the central government has banned short message service (SMS) for postpaid subscribers in Jammu and Kashmir, said media reports.

According to reports, the department of telecom (DoT) instructed all the 12 telecom operators both state-owned BSNL and private players like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar, to terminate SMS service to their postpaid users.

“In case of prepaid subscribers, the facility has been restricted to 10 SMSes per day per subscriber,” said DoT.

“SMS messages originated outside JK service area in India and from the networks of International Long Distance (ILD) operators should not be delivered to mobile subscribers in JK service area,” the statement said.

The operators have also been instructed to stop at once all tariff packages offering free SMS service.
