Just 3 days away from their tournament opener, hosts England will play their first warm-up match against arch-rivals Australia at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Saturday. Both the teams have been in good form leading up to the World Cup as they have recorded impressive victories in series against India, Pakistan and New Zealand.
However, England have a big problem at hand. Captain Eoin Morgan injured his left index finger during training at the Ageas Bowl and has been taken to hospital for an X-ray. Morgan injured himself while taking catches from a bowling machine ahead of their warm-up match against Australia. There has been no update regarding his injury but he is set to miss the Australia clash.
“Eoin Morgan took a knock to his left index finger fielding this morning. He is going to the hospital after practice for a precautionary X-ray,” a spokesperson for the ECB said.
On the other hand, Australia began their World Cup preparations with a seven-wicket victory over West Indies at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday. They were given a target of 229 but Shaun Marsh and former skipper Steve Smith contributed109 for the third wicket to chase down the total inside 39 overs. There was a scare for Australia in the match as Usman Khawaja was struck on the head by an Andre Russell bouncer in the second over of Australia’s innings. He had to retire hurt from the match but was cleared of serious injury.
