PM expressed sorrow on a huge train accident in UP today

NEW DELHI: In the worst train accident this year, at least 35 people were killed and over 200 injured when 15 bogies of a speeding Delhi-bound Kalka Mail derailed in Fatehpur on Sunday.

Derailment occurred at 12.20 p.m. when the packed train from Howrah reached near Malwa station, about 120 km from Lucknow.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed sorrow at the loss of lives in the rail accident in Uttar Pradesh and directed the Railway Ministry to deploy all available resources in the area for rescue and relief operations.

He also spoke to the Minister of State for Railways about the incident.

A statement from the PMO said, “The Prime Minister has expressed deep sorrow and shock at the loss of lives caused by the accident at Malwa station involving the Kalka Mail.”

It said he has spoken to the Minister of State for Railways and to the Chairman, Railway Board and instructed that all available resources in the area be deployed for rescue and relief operations.

The statement said the Ministry of Railways has already announced ex-gratia relief to the next of kin of those killed and also to those injured in the accident.

The accident occurred when 13 bogies of Delhi-bound Kalka Mail from Howrah derailed near Malwa station in Fatehpur today.
