Strict action on negligence of Parents

BHOPAL: Chief Minister of MP Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that government will take strict action for not attending to senior citizens and not giving maintenance allowance to them. he said it is the pious duty of children to serve and maintain their parents.

He was Addressing Senior Citizens’ Panchayat at his residence on Tuesday. Up to Rs. 10 thousand maintenance allowances can be awarded for senior citizens under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 and three months’ imprisonment can also be awarded to those not serving their parents.

The act was implemented on August 23, 2008 in the state. The act gives opportunity to those who cannot maintain themselves from their income or the income from their property, to seek maintenance allowance from their children or relatives.

Neglectance of parents has been defined as cognizable offences and can results in the fine up to Rs. 5 thousand and three months’ sentence.
