Centre Agrees to Lift Ban on Construction of First Phase of Maheshwar Project

In a major relief to the state government, the Centre has agreed to lift ban on construction of the Maheshwar Dam Project.

Madhya Pradesh chief secretary Avani Vaish called on Principal Secretary to PM TKA Nayar at New Delhi today in the connection.

During the meeting, Nayar said that the ban on construction work of the project would immediately be lifted so that the work of fitting its gates can be completed.

However, a meeting will be held again at PMO next week for the sanction of rest of the work.

In the meeting, Vaish reiterated chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhans’ assurance that no area would be allowed to be submerged without complete rehabilitation of oustees.

Also, at chief minister’s behest, Vaish expressed gratitude towards the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for this decision.

A couple of days ago, Chouhan had called on Singh and had urged him to get an early clearance from Ministry of Environment and Forests to Maheshwar and other projects of the state.

Singh had assured to get the clearance for Maheshwar hydel power project and other pending projects.
