National symposium on climate change and smart agriculture on June 13 and 14

Bhopal: An important national symposium will be held during Krishi Mahotsav on climate change, its effects and precautionary methods at Gwalior on June 13 and 14. Eminent subject experts of the country and state will participate in it. The symposium will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Union Minister of Steel and Mining Shri Narendra Singh will also be present.

“Climate Change and Smart Agriculture Technologies” is the topic of the national symposium to be held at Rajmata Vijay Raje Scindia Agriculture University, Gwalior. Apart from inaugural sessions, the symposium will have 6 other sessions. On the first day June 13, Deputy Director General of ICAR, New Delhi Shri A.K. Sikka will chair the session “Climate Change and Climatic Variability – Causes and Consequences on Agricultural Production” where Dr. U.M. Rao, Project Coordinator, AICRP on Agro-met, CRIDA, Hyderabad will deliver lecture on “Current and Projected Climate Change for India”, Dr. R.K. Bhatt, Director CAZRI, Jodhpur on “Impact of Climate Change on Arid Region Agriculture”, Dr. B.P. Bhatt, Director ICAR, Research Complex for Eastern Region on “Impact of Climate Change on Eastern India Agriculture”, Dr. S.V. Nagachan, Director ICAR, Research Complex for NEH Region on “Impact of Climate Change on North-East Agriculture” and Dr. K.M. Bujarbaruah, vice chancellor, Assam Agriculture University on “Impact of Climate Change in the Livestock Sector”.

In the technical session, discussions will be held on “Climate Smart Technologies to Mitigate Climatic Adversities”. The session will be presided over by vice chancellor of VNVK University Dr. B. Venkateswarlu where Dr. P.K. Agrawal, Regional Programme Leader, CCAFS, IWMI, New Delhi will deliver lecture on “Climate Smart Agriculture”, Dr. M.L. Jat of CIMMYT, New Delhi on “Conservation Agriculture for Managing the Adversity of Climate Change”, Dr. K.K. Singh, Director, CIAE, Bhopal on “Agriculture Mechanisation for Minimising the Risk of Climate Change”, Dr. A.K. Sikka, Deputy Director General, ICAR, New Delhi on “Managing Climate Change through Integrated Watershed Development”, Dr. V.P. Singh, Senior Advisor Policy and Impact”, Regional Centre for South Asia, New Delhi on “Agro Forestry System for Managing the Climate Risks”, Dr. C. Devakumar, FAO, TCDC Consultant, New Delhi on “Pest Management in Changing Climate Scenario”, Dr. V.S. Rathore, CAZRI, Jodhpur on “Improving Water Productiviy Towards Smart Agriculture” and Dr. N.S. Nathawat, CAZRI, Jodhpur on “Physiological Approaches for Improving Crop Productivity in Climate Change”.

The third technical session will be held on second day June 14 on “Climate Change Impact on Madhya Pradesh Agriculture” which will be presided over by Dr. Rajesh Rajora, Principal Secretary Farmers Welfare and Agriculture Development. In this session, Dr. Barun Dev Pal of ISECC, Bengaluru will deliver lecture on “Impact of Climate Change on the Agriculture Production in MP”, Dr. V.S. Tomar, vice chancellor, JNKVV, Jabalpur on “Soil Management in Changing Climate Scenario”, Dr. Rajesh Rajora on “Agriculture Interventions on Climate Change for Madhya Pradesh”, Dr. D.R. Saxena, Principal Scientist, RVSKVV, COA, Sehore on “Impact of Climate Changes on Occurrence and Recurrence of Diseases on Pulse Crops”, Dr. M.P. Jain, , Principal Scientist, RVSKVV, COA, Indore on “Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies for Climate Changes in Dry Lands” and Dr. Sandeep Sharma, , Principal Scientist, RVSKVV, COA, Sehore on “Behavioural Changes in Crop Insect Pests due to Climatic Changes”.

Fourth technical session “Forecasting Weather Extremes and Agro-Advisory Services” will be chaired by Dr. V.S. Tomar, vice chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru Agriculture University, Jabalpur where Dr. K.K. Singh, Head, IMD, New Delhi will deliver lecture on “Weather Vagaries and Role of Weather Forecasting in Agro Advisory Services”, vice chancellor of VNVK University, Prabhani, Dr. B. Venkateswarlu on “Managing Hail Storm Damage in Crops” and Dr. S.K. Sharma, Senior Scientist, RVSKVV, COA, Indore on “Weather-based Agro-Advisory Services in Madhya Pradesh”.

Theme of fourth and fifth technical sessions will be “Socio-economic and Policy Issues on Climate Change and Role of lCTs in Increasing Public Awareness and Mitigation Strategies among Farming Communities” which will be presided over by K.M. Bujarbaruah, vice chancellor, Assam Agriculture University, Jorhat. In these sessions, Dr. B.K. Singh of BKC Wealthsys Pvt. Ltd will deliver lecture on “Policy-related Issues for Managing the Influences of Climatic Change”.

Dr. Anil Kumar Singh, Vice Chancellor, Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Agriculture University, Gwalior will chair the concluding session of the symposium. In this session, results and recommendations of all the sessions will be finalized.
