Indefinite ‘Rail roko’ protest in Bhopal

BHOPAL: Rail roko protest will be organized by five organizations of the survivors of Bhopal gas disaster. They have decided to organize an indefinite ‘rail roko’ demonstration from the next month if their demand for ensuring adequate compensation to all victims is not met within a month.

Rasheeda Bee of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationary Karmchari Sangh said, “The government is compelling us to take such steps. We are hopeful that the call for indefinite peaceful rail roko will receive positive response from the survivors of the disaster.”

The organizations will also send letters to prime minister, chief minister and Group of Ministers regarding the denial of compensation to majority of gas victims.

Satinath Sarangi, Bhopal Group of Information and Action said, “This is going to be the first rail roko protest in 27 years by the victims.”

On Monday addressing a press conference he said, “We have decided on rail roko considering the urgency of the matter and to pressurize the government to take actions immediately.”

The organizations that had carried out a city wide bandh recently, demanded from the centre and the state to present accurate figures of injury and death in the soon to be heard curative petition in the Supreme Court.

“After the successful Bhopal bandh, rail roko will be the second step to make the government aware of its apathy towards gas disaster victims,” said Bal Krishna Namdeo of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Nirashrit Pension Bhogi Sangharsh Morcha.

Namdeo said, the organizations have also launched a signature campaign in which more than ten thousand gas victims have actively participated. This petition will be submitted to the central and state governments in the next 15 days.
