Forest Dept to Start Wildlife Census in MP from Tomorrow

A census of the wildlife in Madhya Pradesh, including the declining tiger population and vultures, will be initiated by the state forest department from tomorrow, reported PTI.

A work force of 25,000 staffers and contractual workers will be engaged with the census, report said.

“The seven-day-long census of the wildlife animal and vultures will begin tomorrow for which all preparations have been made in Madhya Pradesh,” additional principal chief conservator of forest (Wildlife) TR Sharma was quoted as saying.

Sharma told that vultures census was being carried out in the state for the first time, said report.

“The counting by different techniques, including pugmarks and kills, will be completed by February 16 after which the datas and figures compilation work will completed by March 30 and sent to the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun,” he was quoted as saying.

“After this, the WII will study and analyse the data with the help of camera trap method and will give its final report,” Sharma was quoted as saying.

He informed that the census was being carried out after four years with previous one done in 2006.

The final report on the number of wildlife animals of this (2006) census after deep analysis was released in 2008, he said.
