Bhopal Accords Befitting Farewell to Shahar Qazi Abdul Lateef

BHOPAL  —  Tens of thousands of people turned out to pay their last respects to Bhopal Shahar Qazi Abdul Lateef Qasmi, who was accorded a befitting burial at the Jhada Kabristan in the Jahangirabad area of the state capital on Sunday afternoon.

Streets in the old city areas wore a deserted look this morning as shocked residents struggled to come to terms with the news of Qasmi’s untimely and unfortunate demise, in the wee hours of Sunday.

The Namaaz-e-Janaaza, held at the Lal Parade ground, was attended by an estimated 30,000 people, who braved the scorching afternoon sun to turn the streets in Jahangirabad into a maze of white as people struggled to get a last glimpse of the eminent scholar.

Qasmi’s death has left a huge void, especially as it comes within months of the demise of at least two other respected religious figures in the city, said Zubair Mehvi, an accountant, who sacrificed his weekend siesta to attend the funeral.

Scores like him arrived in the state capital from places as far as Raisen, Badi Bareli, Sukhi Sewaniyan to bid adieu to one of the city’s best known religious figures.
