32 cases of Lumpy virus in Bhopal

All the infected cattle found in the urban area

The danger of lumpy virus is increasing in the capital Bhopal. In the last 7 days, a total of 32 cows infected with lumpy virus have been found from different areas of the city. Of these, 11 cows were found wandering on the road. Those who have now been caught have been kept in the animal shelter of Jahangirabad, while the remaining cattle are with the animal owners. Infected cattle have been asked to be kept away from healthy animals. So that the infection of lumpy does not spread.

The condition of two to three infected cows is critical. Veterinary department officials say that infected animals are kept in quarantine for seven days. After this they recover.

All the infected cattle were found from urban areas. These include both cattle roaming on the streets and domesticated ones. Dr. Ajay Ramteke, Deputy Director of Veterinary Services, said that all 32 cows are from urban areas. Infected cows have been traced from many places including Gandhinagar, Chhola, Karond, Mata Mandir, Hathakheda, Bhadbhada. Not a single case has been found yet in the rural areas of the district or in Berasia.

Eleven infected cows roaming on the streets of the city have been kept quarantined at Aasra Animal Shelter in Jahangirabad. These include 6 calves. Dr. Sunila Saran, Nodal Officer of Aasra Animal Shelter, said that the Municipal Corporation has admitted 11 cows infected with Lumpi virus for treatment. These infected cattle have been kept separate from normal animals. They are being given anti-bacterial and anti-biotic medicines.

The cattle rearers themselves take care of the pet cattle including their safety and care. The effect of lumpy virus has been seen in 21 of his cattle. Deputy Director Dr. Ramteke said that infected pet animals have been kept in quarantine with their owners. On the other hand, vaccinations are also being given to cattle in the city.

Regarding testing of lumpy virus in animals, Dr. Saran said, blood samples of animals are sent to the lab. Sample report comes in 2 to 3 days. The animals whose report is positive are quarantined and treatment is started.

Dr. Saran said that Lumpy virus spreads between animals through contact with each other. This is the reason why infected and healthy cattle are kept separately.

Lumpy infected animals show a variety of symptoms. Animals suffering from this virus get fever. They become lethargic. There is swelling in the feet. Saliva starts coming out of the mouth continuously. Red lumps form in the body. Holes start appearing all over the body. The animals’ milk production either reduces or they stop giving milk. This disease spreads from one fly, mosquito to another animal, but this disease does not spread to humans.
