1 Killed, 22 Injured as Amrapali Express derailed

One person was killed and at least 22 others were wounded, three of them seriously, as an engine and three bogies of the Amrapali Express derailed near Naugachia in Bhagalpur district, said police.

Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Neelamani was quoted as saying that the accident took place around 11.45 pm last night while the Amritsar-Katihar Amrapali Express, on its way to Katihar, was crossing Parasha section of the East Central Railway (ECR).

A passenger, identified as Puran Singh, 18, died on the spot, he said.

He said that 22 other passengers were injured and have been admitted to close by hospitals. The condition of three of them, including a woman who suffered head injuries, is said to be serious.

An ECR spokesman said that a relief train reached the spot soon after the incident and passengers were pulled out of the derailed bogies.

Senior railway officials and engineers reached the spot early morning today.
