To Defend Or Not, Waghmare Seeks a Day to Decide

Still shaken by the stone-pelting incident outside her house yesterday, advocate Anjali Waghmare says she needs a day to decide on if she would continue as defence counsel for Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone 26/11 attacker caught alive during the Mumbai terror attack.

“I am under a lot of pressure… Give me one day to decide and think over it,” an emotional Waghmare is reported to have told special judge ML Tahiliyani on Tuesday.

“The media has exaggerated and is saying that I have taken up the case voluntarily. There were more than 300 people outside my house yesterday,” she said.

Several women protesters had also visited her residence and questioned her on how she could defend Kasab especially as she was a police officers wife living in the same neighbourhood where two of the Mumbai police officers killed in the terror incident had lived.

Waghmare said that the media should give the correct message to people.

An alumni of the prestigious Symbiosis College, Pune, Waghmare is an advocate from the Maharashtra Service Legal Authority, she was appointed Kasab’s defence counsel by the special court on Monday.

The 26/11 trial if not delayed due to the new controversy is scheduled to commence on April 6.
