TN Govt Turns Down Nalini’s Plea for Premature Release

The Tamil Nadu government has turned down the petition moved by former Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi’s assassin Nalini Sriharan, requesting a premature release, said media reports.

On March 11, the state government had said that it would take a decision on the plea within two weeks.

Government’s counsel is reported to have provided this assurance to the Madras High Court, reports said.

Besides, the government also submitted to the High Court the report prepared by the Prison Advisory Board, reports said.

“For some factors, beyond the government’s control, if the decision making process takes a little longer we may have to ask the court for some more time,” P S Raman, Advocate General of the Tamil Nadu government was quoted as saying.

On March 10, two-member bench of the High Court comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and KK Sasidharan had asked the state government to submit their report on March 11.

Undergoing life imprisonment, Nalini is lodged in the Vellore Central Jail and in her plea said that she was entitled for release as far as 2005, as she had completed 14 years in jail.
