Taslima Nasrin Article Triggers Violence in K’taka, Curfew in Shimoga

Curfew was clamped in Shimoga city and prohibitory orders were imposed in Hassan district of Karnataka after two people were killed, including one in police firing, as demonstrators protesting the publication of controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin’s article in a vernacular daily turned violent on Monday, say reports citing the police.

“One person died in police firing and the other of injuries from assault,” MB Pravin, additional superintendent of police at Shimoga, was quoted as saying by IANS,

Protesting the publication of the translated article in a local daily, the protesters forced establishments in Shimoga to down shutters and indulged in stone pelting and arson.

Authorities imposed curfew in the area, after baton charges and prohibitory orders failed to control the protesters.

Meanwhile, authorities imposed section 144, banning assembly of more than four people, in Hassan after protesters turned violent and indulged in stone pelting.
