Six Indian Pugilists Punch Gold at C’wealth Boxing

Continuing their winning streak, Indian boxers on Wednesday outpunched competition to end with a spectacular tally of six out of 10 gold medals on offer at the Commonwealth Boxing Championships in New Delhi.

The first to strike gold was Parmjeet Samota, who defeated Joseph Parker of New Zealand, to win the super heavyweight title.

The second gold came from Amandeep, who defeated Kenya’s Peter Mungai 3:0 in the final of the light fly weight category.

Dinesh Kumar won the third title for India, when his opponent Callium Johnson of Scotland withdrew from the title-clash with an elbow injury.

Vijender, the blue eyed boy of Indian boxing and world number one, outclassed Frank Buglioni of England to bag the fourth gold in the middle-weight category.

Asian champion Suranjoy was the next to strike gold for India when the referee stopped his contest against Oliver Lavigi of Mauritius.

Jai Bhagwan beat Bahamas Valention Knowles 6-2. Both boxers were tied 2-2 after the second round but in the third, Jai Bhagwan dominated and won four points.

The huge gold haul helped the pugilists find a team and kit sponsor in Monnet Steel group.

The six gold medallists and national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu were presented Hero Honda Hunk bikes by group chairman Pawan Munjal, who attended the day’s proceedings at the Talkatora Stadium.
