Maoists, Police Exchange Gunfire in Jharkhand

With Maoist violence continuing, the police and the rebels exchanged heavy gunfire on Saturday near Rania in Jharkhand’s Khunti district, said official sources.

According to some unconfirmed reports, at least two policemen were wounded in the gunfire at Bindukel, some two km from Rania.

Deputy Commissioner Puja Singhal, however, said that all the police personnel were safe and the Superintendent of Police have rushed to the spot.

She said that the details of the incidence would be available only after superintendent of police returns.

The encounter, which took place in the jungles near Rania, about 60 km from Ranchi, comes close on the heels of the killing of 22 police personnel in three days – 11 on Thursday in West Singhbhum district and 11 yesterday in Bokaro district of Jharkhand.
