LeT Threatens to Disrupt Poll Process in J&K

Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT) on Saturday threatened to launch terror attacks to coincide with elections in Jammu and Kashmir and said that people participating in the polls would do so “at their own peril,” said a report by the news agency IANS.

“We will launch fidayeen (suicide) attacks during the poll process,” LeT spokesman Abdullah Ghaznavi was quoted as saying in a statement to Srinagar-based media outlets, said the report.

“If people vote they will be doing so at their own peril,” warned the statement.

The Pak-based terror machine, which allegedly was the prime consirator behnd the 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai said that India was trying to strengthen it position in the state.

The unprecedented turnout in November-December assembly elections in the state dealt a severe blow to the secessionists in the state, and terror outfits fearing a repeat performance by the voters are vowing to disrupt poll proceedings.

The LeT threat comes close on the heels of United Jehad Council (UJC) and separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani’s poll boycott call.

Syed Sallahuddin, chief of the UJC, an amalgam of 13 militant organizations, has threatened to disrupt the poll process, say media reports

The moderate faction of the Hurriyat faction led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, however, says election were a non-issue, he said it was for people to decide whether they should vote or boycott the polls.

“These (elections) are for day to day governance and development. For us in the Hurriyat Conference holding elections is a non-issue,” acting Hurriyat chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari was quoted as saying.
