Jyoti Basu Critical after Pneumonia Attack, On Ventilator

Hospitalized after pneumonia attack, former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu is in critical condition and on ventilator, said doctors.

A medical bulletin said that a team of doctors monitoring the health of the 95-year-old communist veteran will meet again at 0500 hrs to review his health.

“Basu is critical. He was put on ventilator support early this (Wednesday) morning as he was having respiratory problems,” said the bulletin from AMRI Hospital.

“His condition is being monitored. The medical team will again meet at 5 pm. All supporting medicines are being provided.”

Debasish Sharma, medical superintendent of the hospital, was quoted as saying by IANS: “His condition is serious.”

The bulletin said the Basu is having trouble breathing since Wednesday morning and is under observation.

Basu was admitted to the hospital last week after a pneumonia attack and kept in Intensive Cardiac Care Unit of the hospital in Salt Lake, the Kolkata suburb where he lives.
