Honour Killing: SC Issues Notices to Central, State Govts for Action

Taking cognizance of honour killings, the Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and six state governments instructing them to take measures to safeguard young couples from facing wrath of the khap panchayats, said media reports.

The apex court issued notices acting on a PIL moved by an NGO Shakti Vahini seeking harsh action against those resorting to killing in the name of honour, reports said.

The NGO has also demanded a tough law to check honour killings.

Many north Indian states are in the stranglehold of the defiant caste panchayats and so honour killing continue their in their most horrible form.

Yesterday, the family members of a girl allegedly killed her and her teenaged lover and hanged them as exhibits in their house for the village to see their ‘fate’.

According to police, Monika (18) and her lover Rinku (19), both from Jat families, were brutally killed for honour at Nimriwali village, near Bhiwani. The father of the girl, her brother, uncle and cousins are suspected to be behind the crime and are absconding.

According to preliminary investigations, the injury marks on the bodies of Monika and Rinku suggest that they were tortured by their killers.
