Facing Rebellion on Women Bill, BJP Decides to Issue Whip to MPs

Following a section of party MPs expressing opposition to Women’s Reservation Bill and threatening to vote against it in Lok Sabha, the BJP has decided to crack on the dissenters by issuing a whip to them to back it, reported PTI.

Swinging into action, top party brass today decided after a meeting that a whip would be issued to its MPs to make them toe the party line, said report.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley and former president Rajnath Singh met the dissenting MPs in the morning to mitigate their fears over the bill, report said.

After the meeting, Swaraj said that party would issue a whip to its MPs when the bill came up in the Lok Sabha, said report.

If MPs defies the whip, it will attract disqualification provision against them, report said.

The prominent MPs opposing the legislation are Yogi Adityanath, MP from Gorakhpur, former union minister Hukumdeo Narayan Yadav, an old socialist from Janata Dal parivar, and party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha Ramesh Bais, said report.

Report said that some of the party MPs are even said to have threatened to vote against the measure when it is taken up in the Lower House. The support of BJP, which has 116 members in Lok Sabha, is crucial for the passage of the Constitutional amendment bill.

It may be mentioned that BJP MPs had supported the measure in Rajya Sabha.
