Court to Announce Verdict in Ruchika Molestation Case on May 20

A Chandigarh court will announce its verdict on May 20 on former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore’s plea challenging his conviction in Ruchika molestation case, said media reports.

Rathore was convicted and sentence to six-month term by a CBI court in December 2009 in the case.

The arguments on Rathore’s petition concluded today in the court of Additional District Sessions Judge Gurbir Singh, reports said.

It may be mentioned that Ruchika’s family and friends are seeking an enhancement of Rathore’s sentence and CBI is also pushing for a maximum of two year imprisonment in the case.

Ruchika’s father Subhash Girhotra said that he would move the court to charge Rathore with abetting his daughter’s suicide, the maximum punishment for which is 10 years, sid reports.

Ruchika, a budding tennis player, was molested on August 12, 1990 by Rathore when he was the IG (law and order) Haryana in his office. While Rathore went on to become the state DGP, Ruchika committed suicide on December 28, 1993 after allegedly facing a lot of harassment from Rathore to take back the case.
