Railway facing a loss more than 5 crores due to the Jat agitation

NEW DELHI: Due to the ongoing Jat agitation train services continued to be disrupted with the cancellation of 74 trains and short termination of 37 others.

Since 5th of March, the agitation by the community on Delhi-Bathinda section of Northern Railway and Bikaner and Jaipur Division of North Western Railway has caused more than Rs 100 crore loss to the Railways.

A senior Railway Ministry official said, “Though we have not calculated the exact amount of loss due to the Jat agitation, it is estimated to be more than Rs 5 crore a day due to the cancellation and short termination of trains.”

According to the data prepared by the ministry as many as 2,582 trains has been cancelled till March 22. In order to help passengers, also the Railways have opened additional counters to refund fares to passengers due to the cancellation of trains.

“We have refunded Rs 7 crore to 8 lakh passengers till March 19,” said the official.

The cancelled trains includes New Delhi- Ahmedabad-New Delhi Rajdhani Express, Kalka-New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi Express, Delhi Sarai Rohilla- Kalka Himalayan Queen Express, Ahmedabad-Haridwar Express, Delhi Sarai Rohilla- Jodhpur Rajasthan Express, Jaipur-Amritsar Express, Jaipur- Chandigarh-Jaipur Garib Rath Express, Sriganganagar-Delhi Sarai Rohilla AC Express, Ahmedabad-Delhi Ashram Express, Ahmedabad-Haridwar Express and Haridwar-Sriganganagar Intercity Express.

On Thursday Railways has announced the cancellation of 52 trains and short termination of 28 trains keeping the ongoing agitation in mind.
