Laptops in place of color TVs

NEW DELHI: “In our manifesto we had promised laptops to students from OBC, SC and ST. Now I announce that all students will be given free laptops,” said Karunanidhi.

On Thursday for the April 13 Assembly polls from Tiruvarur, DMK patriarch and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi filed his nomination from his native town.

The 87 year old M Karunanidhi started his election campaign on Wednesday promising freebies and this time his targets are young students.

The corruption taint has had maximum impact in the DMK’s urban strongholds. The reasons behind includes critics say the DMK chief gave up urban Chennai where he has contested since 1967, and drove down to his rural hometown Thiruvarur.

During 2006, the DMK came with the promise of free colour TVs and rice at 1 rupee per kg. His government did deliver the goods but now in 2011, this time is for new laptops.
