Heavy Rains in Mumbai; Eight Die as Wall Collapse in Thane

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Wednesday while nearly eight people die in Thane when a wall collapse due to rains, said media reports.

Torrents, accompanied with strong winds, lashed Mumbai on Tuesday and Wednesday due to which flight schedules were affected, reports said.

The Met department said that the metropolis has received 60.77 mm rainfall since yesterday, with Colaba in south Mumbai receiving 78.6 mm and suburban Santacruz  95.0 mm, said reports.

According to reports, several flights were delayed by one-and-a-half to two hours due to heavy rains, reports said.

However, the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) spokesperson said, “There is an average delay of half-an-hour to 40 minutes across flights.”

Besides, rains caused delay in suburban trains by 10 to 15 minutes, said reports.

Traffic came to a halt as the roads got flooded leading to a huge pile up of cars and buses, reports said.

Water logging has been reported from Parel, Dadar, Andheri and Hindmata.

Yesterday, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) had asked people not to venture into the sea, as the city would witness high tides measuring about 4.70 metres till June 17.

Meanwhile, the BMC has decided to implement a two-tier safety and security system at the city’s seafront, said reports.

In Thane, eight people were killed and four injured when a wall collapse reportedly due to incessant rains, reports said.

Police said that the boundary wall of Birla company fell on the slums at Dnyaneshwar Nagar at 0500 hours, said reports.

They said that fire brigade sources rushed to the spot and the victims were removed from the debris and are rushed to a nearby hospital, reports said.

Four persons, who were injured in the mishap were admitted to Kaushila hospital in Thane district, reports said.

They were identified as Seema Bhagat (35), her son Rohit (10), husband Dudhnath (36) and Sunny Thakur (8), said reports.
