Mubarak fit to move to prison in Cairo

CAIRO: Prior to shifting Mubarak to prison facilities in Cairo, Egypt’s public prosecutor has ordered the transfer of former president Hosni Mubarak to a military hospital.

He has been under medical care since falling ill during questioning about corruption allegations and the killing of protesters.

Mubarak has been concealed in a private hospital wing for the past two weeks in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, hoping to avoid the fate of his two sons Gamal and Alaa.

There have been conflicting reports on his state of health and the reason he was hospitalised, with the state news agency last week reporting the 82-year-old former strongman’s health was “unstable”. But the public prosecutor says the president is now fit to be transferred to Tora prison in Cairo where his sons are being held.

There he will face questioning over allegations of corruption, including charges that his government supplied gas to Israel at below-market prices. He will also be questioned about his role in ordering the violent response to anti-government protests this year in which more than 800 people died.
