25th anniversary of the world’s worst nuclear incident

UKRAINE: Ukraine marks the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl power station explosion which was the world’s worst nuclear accident in the history.

26 April 1986 blast in Chernobyl power station spewed a cloud of radioactive fallout over much of Europe and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes in the most heavily hit areas in Ukraine, Belarus and western Russia.

Last week an international donor’s conference in Kiev raised £485 million of the £653 million needed to build a new shelter and a storage facility for spent fuel.

In Kiev on Monday night Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich and Russian Orthodox patriarch Kirill will commemorate the victims of the nuclear accident with prayers and candle-lighting before they travel to the Chernobyl station on Tuesday.
