Virat Kohli edges past Rohit Sharma to become leading run-getter in T20Is

Indian captain Virat Kohli etched his name into record books once again despite his team’s defeat in the second T20I against West Indies on Sunday. Kohli surpassed teammate and his deputy Rohit Sharma to reclaim the top spot in the list of highest run-getters in T20Is. Kohli now has 2563 runs to his name in the shortest format of the game and his marginally ahead of Rohit, who is following him closely.

Kohli needed just three runs to surpass Rohit ahead of the second T20I against West Indies on Sunday. However, the Hitman scored 15 runs in the game which meant Kohli needed 18 runs to become the leading run-getter in T20Is when he came out to bat at the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Kohli scored 19 off 17 balls before getting dismissed by Kesrick Williams and managed to edge past Rohit.

Here are the top three run-getter in T20Is:
Virat Kohli – 2563 runs

Rohit Sharma – 2562 runs

Martin Guptill – 2436 runs

Kohli is just one run ahead of Rohit in the list but has managed to outscore him in lesser number of innings. Kohli has 2563 runs in just 69 innings at a brilliant average of 51.26 compared to Rohit, who has scored 2562 runs in 95 innings at an average of 31.62.

While the race to become the leading run-getter in T20Is will continue in the third T20I in Mumbai on Wednesday, India will be looking to bounce back and win the do-or-die clash after losing the second T20I by eight wickets. It was a disappointing performance from the Indian batsmen as the likes of Kohli, Rohit and others failed to deliver.

Shivam Dube, who was promoted to bat up the order, slammed a quickfire half-century (54 off 30 balls) and combined with Rishabh Pant (33 off 22) to help India post a good total of 170 runs on the board after an early collapse. However, West Indies chased down the total without breaking a sweat as Lendl Simmons (67) and Nicholas Pooran (38) made it a one-sided affair with their brilliant knocks.

West Indies chased down the target with nine balls to spare and will be looking to seal the series when they face the hosts in the final T20I on Wednesday.
