Nokia 5.1 Plus may launch on July 11, Snapdragon 710, Snapdragon 845 Nokia phones tipped for Q3 2018

The Nokia 5.1 Plus aka Nokia X5 is expected to be the next smartphone launch from HMD Global, which has been on a kind of spree of late unveiling one Nokia phone after another. The Nokia 5.1 Plus, which is expected to be a larger version of the Nokia 5.1, passed through TENAA last month, indicating that a launch was close at hand and now a leaked image of a promo poster suggests the company is ready to unveil it on July 11. Additionally, the source of the leaked image further claims that HMD is planning two more Nokia phones in Q3, one sporting a Snapdragon 710 chipset and the other being a flagship with Snapdragon 845 SoC.

Let’s first talk about the Nokia 5.1 Plus (or Nokia X5 as it might be called in China) since that’s closer to being unveiled. The leaked image, surfaced on Baidu, shows the phone placed next to a poster of the Nokia X6. This gives us a good idea of the size of the notch that will be seen on the Nokia 5.1 Plus. To recall, the Nokia X6 was launched a couple of months ago in China (expected to launch globally soon) and is the first Nokia phone to sport a notch. CAD renders of the Nokia 5.1 Plus in the past have suggested it will come with a notch as well, only wider than the Nokia X6 and the leaked photo of the poster seems to confirm that. We can only assume at this point that the Nokia 5.1 Plus could hide a few additional sensor, possibly for an improved facial recognition, or dual selfie cameras.

As per the TENAA listing last month, the Nokia 5.1 Plus will sport a 5.86-inch with HD+ display and will likely be powered by either a Snapdragon 600-series chip or a Helio P60 SoC. As for the cameras, the phone may come with a 13MP + 8MP configuration. The front could also see an 8-megapixel sensor similar to the Nokia 5.1. Lastly, the phone could house a 3000mAh battery, which is almost the same as the Nokia 5.1 so it seems the ‘Plus’ here isn’t going to be associated with a bigger battery.

According to the latest Baidu post, the Nokia 5.1 Plus or Nokia X5 will go on sale in China starting at CNY 799 (approx Rs 8,200) for the 32GB variant. There may be a 64GB version as well that could cost CNY 999 (approx Rs 10,300).

TWO NEW NOKIA PHONES IN Q3
The Baidu post goes on to add that HMD is planning two more Nokia phones for launch in the third quarter of 2018. The post does not mention the names of the phones, but only states that one of them will sport a Snapdragon 710 chipset while the other looks like it’s going to be HMD’s flagship smartphone with a Snapdragon 845 chipset. Both the reported phones sound possible as it’s not the first time we’re hearing about them.

Earlier this month, noted tipster Roland Quandt of WinFuture.de tweeted that HMD is working on a Snapdragon 710-powered Nokia phone that is codenamed “Phoenix”. The SD710 chipset was announced in May as a mid-range chipset that will bring features normally found in a flagship chip like SD845. This would make mid-range phones feel as powerful as high-end flagships, at a lower cost.

As for the Snapdragon 845-powered Nokia phone, Quandt recently reported that HMD is working on a high-end Nokia smartphone that is being called the A1 Plus internally, but could be launched as the Nokia 9 at IFA 2018. The Nokia A1 Plus will not only come with all the premium trimmings of 2018, but it is also tipped to come with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
