72nd anniversary of Quit India Movement

Bhopal: On the 72nd anniversary of Quit India Movement on August 9, Governor Shri Ram Naresh Yadav has paid tributes to freedom fighters who laid down their lives during freedom struggle. The Governor will garland statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the premises of old Vidhan Sabha on August 9 marking anniversary of Quit India Movement.

Governor Shri Yadav said that it was a mass movement in which lakhs of common people participated. The movement had attracted large number of youths. Students abandoned studies and were sent to jail for taking part in the movement. Shri Yadav said that Mahatma Gandhi had chosen date of August 9, 1942 under a well-conceived strategy. The movement was given a major dimension by Lal Bahadur Shastri. Socialists like Jai Prakash Narayan were involved in underground resistance activities.

Shri Yadav said that on Mahatma Gandhi’s call, Quit India Movement was started on August 9, 1942, exactly 17 years after world-famous Kakori case. Quit India Movement or August Kranti was the last major fight, which shook foundations of the British Rule in India. Indians felt cheated when Crispps Mission left India empty-handed. It 9was a non-violent non-cooperation movement for immediately freeing India from British Rule. On Mahatma Gandhi’s call all joined the movement including women, men, elderly persons and India attained freedom after a long gap of 5 years on August 15, 1947.
