Rishabh Pant is like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma but needs to get his timing right: Pravin Amre

Another series, another flop show with the bat. Amid the rising concerns over the place of Rishabh Pant in India’s limited-overs sides, the young wicket-keeper batsman is showing no signs of improvement. In a scenario where Pant’s failure has become one of the most talked-about topics on social media, former Indian cricketer Pravin Amre has given a piece of advice to the youngster.

Amre was also the assistant coach of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League last season when Pant arrived into the franchise league on the back of a similar run with the bat. The wicket-keeper upped the ante in the IPL and emerged as one of the team’s most consistent players.

Citing the same example, Amre revealed how DC head coach Ricky Ponting and the support staff helped Pant rediscover his form.

“He was coming after poor scores. It was mainly the way chief coach Ricky Ponting handled him and gave him the space to be himself,” Amre was quoted as saying. “It is also about not trying too hard; we tried to ensure he didn’t fall into the trap by coming under pressure. We tried to keep it simple, break the game into small parts.”

The former cricketer also compared Pant with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in terms of his timing with the bat, but asserted that the youngster needs to focus on getting the timing right as he seems to be confused over the approach with which he needs to bat.

“He is like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, a great timer of the ball. He has to focus on getting it right. He seems to be confused how he should be going about it, whether to play the waiting game or his natural attacking game,” said Amre.

Stand-in Indian skipper for the T20I series against Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma, also asked fans and experts to keep their eyes off Pant for a while as the 22-year-old is looking to establish his position in India’s limited overs sides.

With Wriddhiman Saha set to take over the wicket-keeper’s role in the Test series against the Bangla Tigers, Pant would expect himself to reclaim the spot in the home series against West Indies next month.
