Chronology of Mayhem: Worst Attacks in Iraq
With Baghdad streets yet again bloodied on Sunday, following is a summary of some of the worst insurgent strikes in Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003:
March 2, 2004 — Suicide bombers trigger concerted blasts at Shiite Muslim shrines in Karbala and in Baghdad, killing 180.
Sept. 14, 2005 — Baghdad devastated by over a dozen bombings, 178 killed.
Nov. 23, 2006 — Mortar fire and serial (five) car bombings rip Sadr city, 215 killed.
Feb. 3, 2007 — Suicide truck bomber detonated in a Shiite neighbourhood of Baghdad, 137 killed.
March 27, 2007 — At least 150 killed as truck bombers strike northwestern city of Tal Afar.
April 18, 2007 — Concerted bombings kill at least 180 in Shiite Baghdad.
July 7, 2007 — Suicide truck bomb kills 160 in a village south of Kirkuk.
Aug. 14, 2007 — concerted truck bombs hit village of Qahataniya, over 500 killed.
Oct. 25, 2009 — Two car bombs rock downtown Baghdad, 150 killed.
