Social Activist who Unearthed Land Scams Killed in Pune

Social activist Satish Shetty, who worked on RTI and exposed land scams in Maharashtra, has been killed by unidentified assailants at Talegaon Dabhade, about 40 km from from Pune, said police.

PTI reported that Shetty, who left house for a morning walk, was attacked with swords by masked men and died on the spot.

“Around 7.15 a.m. (IST), when Shetty was on his morning walk, some unidentified people assaulted him and injured him seriously. He was rushed to a private hospital, but succumbed later,” Pradeep Aphale, investigating officer of Talegaon Police Station, was quoted as saying by IANS.

Shetty, 38, was actively involved in the anti-corruption drive initiated in Maharashtra by social worker Anna Hazare invoking the Right to Information (RTI) Act, PTI report.

A systematic whistleblower, Shetty was credited with throwing light on several major land scams in the picturesque Talegaon-Lonavala regions, now a favourite with realtors in the state, said IANS report.
