India vs South Africa 3rd Test: Virat Kohli overtakes MS Dhoni’s record of most Test runs as India captain

New Delhi: Virat Kohli on Friday surpassed Mahendra Singh Dhoni to become the India captain with most runs in Test cricket. During India’s second innings of the third Test against South Africa at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, Kohli scored a gritty 41 and took his tally of runs as captain to 3456.

Dhoni as a captain scored 3454 runs for India in 60 Test matches while his successor Kohli took just 35 Tests to better the record. Dhoni was on top of the list after overtaking the legendary India opener Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 3449 runs in 47 Tests as captain.

Mohd Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly are in the fourth and fifth place in the list. As captain, Azharuddin scored 2856 runs from 47 Test matches, while Ganguly led India in 49 matches and scored 2561 runs during the stint.

Kohli has a great run as skipper of the Indian Test team so far, winning 20 off the 34 matches before the ongoing Wanderers Test.

Earlier in the first Test of the series at Cape Town, Wriddhiman Saha broke the record of the most dismissals in a Test by an Indian wicketkeeper. With ten catches in the match, Saha went past the record of nine dismissals set by Dhoni against Australia in Melbourne in December 2014.
