Aamir Khan’s China paycheck for ‘Dangal’ could exceed Rs 100 Crore

New Delhi: Aamir Khan starrer Dangal has already broken records in China, having earned Rs 1,090 crore at the Chinese box office.

The film on Wednesday achieved another first. One of China’s top leaders, the fifth-ranked member of the elite Politburo Standing Committee, Liu Yunshan, hailed the “very popular” film as an Indian success story and a lesson for other developing countries.

Liu, also the top Chinese official in charge of the media, told visiting reporters from BRICS countries on Wednesday, “The film (called Shuaijiao Baba, or Let’s Wrestle, Dad! in Chinese) has become very popular in such a short time and earned even more than many Chinese movies. It’s one of the most successful films in recent years.”

Liu referenced the example of Dangal as an Indian success story in China – and also as an example for other BRICS countries for fostering closer connect.

“I think the Indian media should be proud of the movie as it’s very successful and very influential in China,” Liu said.

As of June 7, the film has made a whopping 1.17 billion Yuan (Rs 1,090 crore) at the Chinese box office since its May 5 release in the country, making it the highest grossing non-Hollywood foreign film in China. The film has been given an extended one-month-run in China, and will be on screens till July 4.

Critics have praised the film, which enjoys a record high of 9.8 on the popular ticketing app Maoyan. Its themes of filial piety and grappling with a patriarchal society, critics have said, have particularly resonated with Chinese movie-goers.
