Govt Apprehensive of Backlash in J&K after Decision on Afzal Guru Mercy Plea
Before moving file on the mercy petition of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, the Delhi government is getting in touch with the Jammu and Kashmir government on the law and order situation that might follow as the government takes any decision, said media reports.
“There were concerns of a backlash in the Kashmir valley if a decision on Afzal was taken,” a senior Delhi government official was quoted as saying on the condition of anonymity. “The Delhi government had a word with the Jammu and Kashmir government on the issue.”
The official, however, declined to give any further information on the matter, reports said.
In the meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah refused to comment when approached for his version on the issue, reported ‘The Asian Age’.
On Friday, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters, “The Delhi government has not opposed Afzal’s death sentence but expressed concerns of law and order if he is executed.”
