SC Upholds Constitutional Validity of MPs’ Funds

In a significant decision, the Supreme Court has maintained the Constitutional validity of the MPLAD scheme under which parliamentarians are given Rs two crore per year for the purpose of development of their constituencies, reported PTI.

“We hold that the MPLAD scheme is valid,” the court was quoted as saying.

The verdict was announced unanimously by a five-judge Constitution Bench led by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan.

“There is no reason for us to interfere in the scheme,” the bench was quoted as saying.

However, bench which also comprises of Justices RV Raveendran, DK Jain, P Sathasivam and JM Panchal, said that improvement can be made in the working of the scheme.
