Rohit Sharma injures himself in practice session ahead of IPL showdown against Kings XI Punjab

In what comes as a major blow to Mumbai Indians’ (MI) hopes of winning their third consecutive Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign, skipper Rohit Sharma has reportedly injured himself on the eve of the match against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), putting his participation in doubt. It was the training session at the Wankhede stadium on Tuesday where Rohit was seen collapsing and then clutching his right thigh.

As per a report in Hindustan Times, Rohit lied on the ground for quite a while as he was being looked after by team physio Nitin Patel. The Hitman then picked himself up and limped past the boundary rope to make what seemed like a slow and painful walk to the dressing room. Even the entire distance wasn’t covered in one go, with Rohit taking a break in between, raising serious concerns over the extent of the injury.

Even the entire distance wasn’t covered in one go, with Rohit taking a break in between, raising serious concerns over the extent of the injury.

A hamstring problem is what it has looked like, and depending upon the severity of the injury, it could take anywhere between two to six weeks. With the Indian team for the ICC World Cup 2019 to be announced on April 15, the exact status of Rohit’s injury might have an impact on the team selection matters too.

There has been no official communication from the Mumbai Indians camp about Rohit’s injury so far. It should also be noted that the 31-year-old had suffered a similar injury right before the start of the 2015 World Cup and had then missed out on three games.

The current status of MI’s season sees them sit outside the top four, at fifth position with three wins from five matches. Although Rohit’s form with the bat hasn’t been spectacular in the campaign so far, he remains vital to the team’s chances of booking a place in the playoffs of IPL 2019.

Mumbai are next scheduled to take on Ravichandran Ashwin’s Kings XI Punjab at home. A victory over KXIP will take Mumbai at least up to the third spot in the league table.
