Budget Session of Parliament Opens Today

With a multi-hued opposition vowing to take the government  to task over a number of issues, including a huge spiral in prices, the Budget session of the parliament opens with the customary address of a joint sitting of the two houses by President Pratibha Patil Monday.

The opposition, BJP, Left parties and others have already demanded that the issue of rising prices be taken up for discussion on the first working day of the three-month long session on Tuesday and indicated of disruption of proceedings in case their demand was not heeded.

Apart from the surge in prices, internal security and reinstatement of talks with Pakistan is also likely to see the government face stringent attacks from the opposition benches.

According to reports, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, unfazed by opposition aggression, has said his government was prepared for discussion on all issues.

The General Budget is to be presented on February 26, the Economic Survey on February 25 and the Railway Budget on February 24.

The Houses will adjourn for a recess between March 16 – April 12 to enable the Standing Committees consider demands for grants of various ministries.

The session concludes on May 7.
